Birdwatching
The Ria Formosa is one of the most important wetlands for aquatic birds in Portugal hosting on a regular basis more than 20.000 birds during Winter. This is one of the reasons why it's considered a IBA (Important Bird Area).
All this protected site area corresponds to a coastal lagoon that extends along 60 km (38 miles) with a huge diversity of habitats. This coastal lagoon is protected from the sea by five barrier islands and two peninsulas.
